So I am trying to adapt the steampunk style but I also want to create my own steampunkish style, I think building in one style or excelling at it just weakens me as a builder so here is a project I am working on, will not show a lot as it is in its VERY early stages

If the thing in the first screenshot is supposed to be a waterwheel, you can put a pressure plate on one side to stop the water from flowing there, therefore giving it a sense of movement.

For me steampunk is all about the idea of movement. So a chimney here , thinghy there. It can be build in different ways, you can add a modern touch to it.

I'm not even good at it, I have a simple style I use, that I find appealing and use all the time, like you said doesn't help you become a better builder.
